My imagery is a blend of realism and abstraction. I frequently incorporate symbols from diverse cultures both ancient and modern into my art. The forces of nature inspire me and the richly varied natural surfaces give rise to my wonder and awe. Travel was part of my early years and I continue to explore far away places and use my camera to record my experiences. I am basically a studio artist and work from my photographs to create my work.
Although I studied all the painting mediums, I prefer to paint with watercolor and acrylics. Transparent paint and its luminosity are essential to my way of working. I layer colors leaving under colors showing through as well as manipulating the surface by lifting and scraping. I frequently use sand and collage elements to create richly textured surfaces to paint on.
Printmaking is a medium I frequently return to since my MFA work was in this process. I use collograph and monotype techniques. There is always a thrilling surprise when pulling a print from the plate after putting it through the etching press!
The dual purpose of my art is to appeal to the eye and simultaneously to stimulate the mind. I want the viewer to share my passion for nature and the environment and to share with them the awe and wonder that I see in the world around us.
